An asset tracking tag is a coin-cell battery, a Bluetooth Low Energy radio, a speaker, and an antenna in a plastic disc. The radio broadcasts a BLE signal that nearby smartphones relay to a cloud network — Apple’s Find My or Google’s Find My Device — which triangulates position without GPS or cellular connectivity, extending battery life to a year or more on a single CR2032. UWB (ultra-wideband) adds precision: where BLE gives you a room, UWB gives you a shelf, with sub-30-centimetre ranging via time-of-flight measurement on Qorvo’s DW3000 chip. The two protocols are complementary, not competing — BLE for coverage, UWB for the last metre.
The MFi certification is the moat. Apple’s Made for iPhone programme controls access to the Find My network, and the approval rate for Chinese factories is reportedly around two percent. The handful of Shenzhen ODMs that hold MFi licenses — Minew, KKM, GUO LINK — can build tags that show up natively in Apple’s Find My app with precision finding and separation alerts, a capability most competitors cannot offer. Google’s Find My Device network is more open, and Android-compatible trackers face a lower certification bar, but the Apple ecosystem commands the premium price and the deeper integration.
This is Longhua District’s category. The five houses profiled below all cluster in Shenzhen’s Longhua and Bao’an, where the Nordic Semiconductor distributor network, SMT assembly houses, RF compliance testing labs, and coin-cell battery suppliers sit within a few kilometres of each other. The same factories also build BLE beacons for retail analytics, RTLS badges for hospital asset tracking, and IoT sensors for cold-chain logistics — the consumer key-finder is one product line inside a broader indoor-positioning business. Nordic’s nRF52 and nRF53 series chips are the de facto standard across the sector.
The frontier is dual-network, dual-protocol: tags that work on both Apple Find My and Google Find My Device simultaneously, with UWB for precision and BLE for coverage. GUO LINK’s SeekTag line and Minew’s cross-platform modules point in this direction. The other frontier is the tag disappearing into the product — embedded tracking in luggage, bicycles, wallets, and pet collars rather than a standalone disc on a keyring. The tracker becomes invisible infrastructure.
