An electric shaver is two competing mechanisms, both decades old. A foil shaver oscillates one or more straight blades behind a perforated metal screen at 10,000 to 14,000 cycles per minute; a rotary shaver spins three circular cutters behind slotted guards. Braun patented the modern foil architecture in Germany in the 1950s, Philips perfected the three-head rotary in Eindhoven. The mechanisms demand different motors: foil runs a high-frequency linear motor for rapid reciprocation, rotary uses a conventional DC motor geared for torque. Panasonic added the arc-foil hybrid from Japan. For fifty years those three houses—Philips, Braun and Panasonic—held the IP that mattered.
The key patents lapsed between roughly 2005 and 2020, and the same thing that happened with the Cherry MX cross-stem happened here: Chinese factories cloned the freed geometries. But unlike switches, where the mount is a single standard, in shavers what opened was a toolkit: three-head rotary assemblies, multi-foil cassettes, IPX7 waterproof sealing, induction-charge coils and lithium cell packs that replaced NiCd. Philips defended its triangular head arrangement aggressively through ITC actions and design registrations, and some coverage survives, but the functional mechanisms are free. Braun’s upper-tier cassette foils are still assembled in Walldürn, Germany, with Chinese-sourced sub-components; every other foil shaver sold under a budget or mid-range label ships complete from China.
The manufacturing cluster is not in the Pearl River Delta. It sits in Zhejiang: Wenzhou, historically the centre of China’s small-appliance and low-voltage electrical industry, and the Ningbo–Cixi corridor to its north. Wenzhou owns the blades, the motors and the final assembly; Cixi and Yuyao add the mould-and-appliance ecosystem. A smaller Shenzhen presence exists for electronics integration and connected features, but the mouldings, the motors and the foils ship from Zhejiang. The houses profiled below operate vertically: blade stamping, motor winding, foil perforation, injection moulding and PCB assembly under one roof, delivering CE- and FCC-ready, retail-boxed product from existing platforms with MOQs from 3,000 units. A European startup building a shaver line goes to Wenzhou, not Shenzhen.
The live frontier is sensor-driven personalisation. Philips’s SenseIQ reads hair density 500 times per second and adjusts motor speed; Braun’s ProSensoAdapt modulates cutting pressure in real time; self-cleaning stations with alcohol cartridges are standard at the premium end. Braun’s NEVO, launched mid-2026 with AeroTouch airflow technology, signals the direction. Above this layer sit the brands themselves. Below it, the Wenzhou–Ningbo ODMs that build the product the rest of the world puts its name on.
