The landscape

An electric shaver is two competing mechanisms, both decades old. A foil shaver oscillates one or more straight blades behind a perforated metal screen at 10,000 to 14,000 cycles per minute; a rotary shaver spins three circular cutters behind slotted guards. Braun patented the modern foil architecture in Germany in the 1950s, Philips perfected the three-head rotary in Eindhoven. The mechanisms demand different motors: foil runs a high-frequency linear motor for rapid reciprocation, rotary uses a conventional DC motor geared for torque. Panasonic added the arc-foil hybrid from Japan. For fifty years those three houses—Philips, Braun and Panasonic—held the IP that mattered.

The key patents lapsed between roughly 2005 and 2020, and the same thing that happened with the Cherry MX cross-stem happened here: Chinese factories cloned the freed geometries. But unlike switches, where the mount is a single standard, in shavers what opened was a toolkit: three-head rotary assemblies, multi-foil cassettes, IPX7 waterproof sealing, induction-charge coils and lithium cell packs that replaced NiCd. Philips defended its triangular head arrangement aggressively through ITC actions and design registrations, and some coverage survives, but the functional mechanisms are free. Braun’s upper-tier cassette foils are still assembled in Walldürn, Germany, with Chinese-sourced sub-components; every other foil shaver sold under a budget or mid-range label ships complete from China.

The manufacturing cluster is not in the Pearl River Delta. It sits in Zhejiang: Wenzhou, historically the centre of China’s small-appliance and low-voltage electrical industry, and the Ningbo–Cixi corridor to its north. Wenzhou owns the blades, the motors and the final assembly; Cixi and Yuyao add the mould-and-appliance ecosystem. A smaller Shenzhen presence exists for electronics integration and connected features, but the mouldings, the motors and the foils ship from Zhejiang. The houses profiled below operate vertically: blade stamping, motor winding, foil perforation, injection moulding and PCB assembly under one roof, delivering CE- and FCC-ready, retail-boxed product from existing platforms with MOQs from 3,000 units. A European startup building a shaver line goes to Wenzhou, not Shenzhen.

The live frontier is sensor-driven personalisation. Philips’s SenseIQ reads hair density 500 times per second and adjusts motor speed; Braun’s ProSensoAdapt modulates cutting pressure in real time; self-cleaning stations with alcohol cartridges are standard at the premium end. Braun’s NEVO, launched mid-2026 with AeroTouch airflow technology, signals the direction. Above this layer sit the brands themselves. Below it, the Wenzhou–Ningbo ODMs that build the product the rest of the world puts its name on.

Huux (Wenzhou Huachang Group, founded 1994, headquartered in Shanghai with its factory in Wenzhou’s Ouhai district) is the blade-technology house, the one that spent three years solving thirty-six process difficulties to produce a foil mesh with 1,307 holes at 53 microns thickness. Its R&D team of forty-plus has worked on razor-head development with Braun, Philips and BaBylissPRO, and the 15,000 m² factory makes shavers, clippers, dryers and straighteners. UL, ETL, CE, GS, KC, PSE and RoHS certified. The house to approach when the blade itself is the competitive advantage.

Fanke (Wenzhou Fanke Electrical Appliance, 17,500 m², 500 staff including sixty R&D engineers and sixty QA inspectors) is the volume dual-platform house, running ten production lines across rotary and foil at 30,000 units a day, over seven million a year. Four- to seven-blade rotary heads, portable USB-C foil shavers, waterproof wet-and-dry models and head shavers, all ISO 9001 certified and carrying CE, UKCA, FCC and RoHS marks. The house for a European brand that wants one ODM to cover the full shaver range from budget to mid-tier.

Jinmi (Ningbo Jinmi Electrical Appliance Technology, 28,000 m², 300-plus staff, daily capacity exceeding two million units) is the patented-platform house. It holds multiple utility-model and design patents on rotary, floating-head and single-head shaver mechanisms and runs an in-house inspection lab. ISO 9001:2015, CE, RoHS and FCC certified, with extensive B2B procurement guides that signal how seriously it takes the ODM buyer relationship. The house for a startup that wants a partner with its own protected IP in the mechanism rather than a clone of somebody else’s.

VGR (Ningbo VGR Electric Appliance, 10,000-plus m², more than 100 patents worldwide) is the dual-track house: its own brand is registered and sold through agents in over 100 countries—Italy, Egypt, Russia, India, the UAE—while the same factory runs full private-label ODM from MOQs of 200 units. Clippers, foil shavers, dryers and straighteners, 90,000-plus units per month, with a 300 m² standardised lab. CE, RoHS, FCC and ETL certified. The house for a brand that wants proven, retail-tested product designs to rebadge fast with low minimums.

Ruiyu Electrics

Wenzhou

Ruiyu (Wenzhou Ruiyu Electrics, blade and component specialist) is the upstream house, the one other shaver factories buy blades from. It runs its own blade factory, mould shop, injection-moulding line, spray-coating facility, silk-screen unit and PCB assembly line, vertically integrated at the component level. It cooperates with world-renowned brands on OEM blade programmes and ships to Australia, North America and Europe. Not the house to commission a finished retail shaver from, but the one to control the blade supply chain if you want better steel than whatever the assembler defaults to.
