A gimbal stabiliser is a three-axis motor platform that counteracts hand shake in real time. Three brushless DC motors (pitch, roll, yaw) driven by dedicated motor-driver ICs, typically Texas Instruments DRV8313-class triple half-H-bridge drivers, provide direct-drive torque without gearing backlash. A six-axis MEMS IMU (three-axis gyroscope plus three-axis accelerometer, commonly TDK InvenSense ICM-42686 or Bosch Sensortec alternatives) senses rotational disturbance, and a control loop running on an STM32-class ARM Cortex-M microcontroller fuses the sensor data through a Kalman or complementary filter and closes a PID loop to hold the camera steady. The entire stack, sensor, compute, motor, fits in a handle.
The form factors map to payloads. Phone gimbals are compact, foldable, with magnetic clamps and AI face-tracking, the volume segment. Camera gimbals (handheld, for DSLR and mirrorless) are larger, with follow-focus and zoom motor ports, the professional segment. Action-camera gimbals are ultra-compact and ruggedised. And integrated gimbal cameras combine the stabiliser and image sensor into a single pocketable unit. Every form factor uses the same core mechanism; the engineering differences are in payload capacity, motor torque curves, battery life and the sophistication of the control algorithm.
This industry clusters unusually. Zhiyun and Feiyu Tech are headquartered in Guilin, Guangxi, not the Pearl River Delta, but both maintain dedicated Shenzhen R&D and branch offices to tap the PRD's supply chain and talent. Hohem, Moza (Gudsen) and Funsnap are Shenzhen-native. The result is a Guilin–Shenzhen axis where algorithm and firmware IP develops in Guilin's lower-cost talent pool while hardware sourcing, prototyping and production happen through Shenzhen's component ecosystem. The open-source STorM32 gimbal controller (running on STM32) was widely cloned and adapted by Shenzhen ODMs, seeding the entire market.
