01 / The landscape

The landscape

Read a humanoid as a bill of materials and it stops being science fiction. It is roughly forty joints, each one a module: a frameless torque motor, a harmonic or planetary reducer, an encoder and a driver, bolted into a limb. Add a pair of dexterous hands, somewhere between seventeen and twenty-two degrees of freedom each, an IMU, force and torque sensing at the wrists and ankles, a battery, and two computers, one a hard real-time motion controller and one an AI compute board. The proportions are the thing worth knowing: the actuators are about half the cost of the machine, which is why the interesting suppliers in this category sell joints rather than robots.

This product breaks the pattern the rest of this atlas runs on. In earbuds the chipset is the reference design; in action cameras the sensor and ISP pairing is. Here there is nothing equivalent to badge. China had more than 140 humanoid makers and over 330 models released by the end of 2025, and almost none of them will sell you a finished platform to put your logo on the way an audio house hands over a TWS reference. What is reusable sits one layer below the robot, in the joint module, the reducer and the hand, and increasingly one layer above it, in motion stacks that the makers themselves open-source. Treat this page as a components market with some brands attached, not an ODM market.

Be clear about where the delta actually stands, because the volume leaders are not in it. Chinese vendors took about 97 percent of the roughly 19,100 humanoids shipped worldwide in the first half of 2026, but the two at the front, AgiBot and Unitree, are Shanghai and Hangzhou companies. The Pearl River Delta's claim is a different one: it holds the listed pioneer in UBTECH, a dense startup bench inside a few Nanshan blocks, the component supply in Bao'an and Dongguan, and the carmakers who know how to turn a prototype into a production line. XPeng broke ground on a 110,000 square metre robot base in Guangzhou's Tianhe district; Leju's Foshan plant with Dongfang Precision assembles a Kuavo about every thirty minutes. Shenzhen builds the body. The brain is often trained somewhere else.

The money and the policy are pointed here anyway. Shenzhen's 2025 to 2027 embodied AI action plan wants more than ten companies worth over 10 billion yuan each, a 50 billion yuan robotics fund is behind it, and the seventy-odd supply chain firms already clustered, from tactile sensors and dexterous hands through to whole machines, are meant to become 1,200 by 2027. What that buys a buyer is speed: a prototype turn that runs twelve weeks in the West runs ten to fourteen days here. What it does not buy is discrimination between houses. Ask any candidate which parts it makes and which it integrates, ask for its domestic content share, and ask for units delivered to paying customers rather than demo footage. The gap between a company that has shipped a hundred robots and one that has shipped a video is the whole diligence.

For export the gate is unusually heavy, and it is moving. A humanoid placed on the EU market is machinery: CE under the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC until 20 January 2027, then the Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, with no grace period on either side of that date and new cybersecurity duties wherever a safety function is affected. ISO 25785-1, the standard being written for dynamically stable robots, is still in development, so the technical file leans on ISO 10218 principles plus the maker's own risk assessment. If the robot ships with an AI system, the EU AI Act sits on top of all of it, and neither framework excuses the other. The tell of a serious partner is a real technical file and a named EU importer, not a CE sticker on the chest plate.

Founded March 2012 in Nanshan Smart Park, UBTECH is the incumbent and the only house here with audited numbers, having listed on the Hong Kong main board in December 2023. The range runs from the Alpha consumer line up through Walker S2 and S1 industrial humanoids to the UWORLD U1. It held 2,985 granted patents at the end of 2025, 1,742 of them invention patents, and led 53 industry standards. In 2025 it sold 1,079 full-size embodied units for 820 million yuan on that line, and it is targeting at least 5,000 industrial humanoids in 2026. The deepest patent wall in the delta, and the slowest to be surprised.

LimX Dynamics 逐际动力

Founded January 2022 by SUSTech professor Zhang Wei, with a COO out of the autonomous driving startup WeRide, LimX came at humanoids from legged locomotion rather than from toys or arms. The TRON 1 and TRON 2 bipeds and the W1 wheeled quadruped are sold as research platforms; the humanoids Luna and Oli sit above them, with the COSA humanoid brain and the FluxVLA engine as the software layer. A 200 million dollar pre-IPO round in July 2026 valued it around 2.2 billion post-money. Because it genuinely sells platforms to labs, it is the most reachable house here if what you want is a legged base to build on.

EngineAI 众擎机器人

Shenzhen EngineAI Robotics Technology was founded in October 2023 by Zhao Tongyang and works out of the Shenzhen Bay Innovation and Technology Center. It made its name on gait, showing the first convincingly natural human walk and then front flips and a humanoid combat league, which is marketing but is also a real controls result. The line spans the SA01, a 12-DOF biped launched at 38,500 yuan, the lightweight PM01, the SE01 at 170cm and 2 m/s, the full-size 29-DOF T800, plus an S2 service robot and a JS01 quadruped. It runs an open ecosystem play and is preparing a listing. The cheapest credible way onto a full-size platform.

Leju Robotics 乐聚机器人

Shenzhen · Foshan

Leju (Shenzhen) Robotics, founded 2016, released Kuavo in December 2023 as China's first open-source humanoid on an OpenHarmony base. The current Kuavo 5, launched October 2025, runs KaihongOS with Huawei Cloud's Pangu models behind it, which is a commercial OpenHarmony distribution rather than Huawei's own branded HarmonyOS, a distinction worth holding onto in a room full of people who blur it. It delivered its hundredth full-size humanoid in 2025 and opened a Foshan plant with Dongfang Precision in March 2026 running roughly one robot every thirty minutes, around 10,000 units a year of capacity, with units working at FAW Hongqi, NIO and Haier. The one with an actual line in the delta.

XPENG Robotics 小鹏机器人

Guangzhou · Tianhe

The carmaker crossover, and the reason Guangzhou belongs on this page. XPeng's IRON stands 1.73m and about 70kg, with more than sixty joints, 200 degrees of freedom, a humanoid spine, biomimetic musculature and hands built 1:1 to human structure at 22 degrees of freedom each. Ground was broken in the first quarter of 2026 on a full-chain robot base of roughly 110,000 square metres in Tianhe, Guangzhou, covering validation and pilot build through to volume, with mass production targeted by the end of 2026 and first commercial placements in XPeng's own stores expected in early 2027. IRON is already doing sorting and transport inside the P7 line. Brings automotive validation discipline and a balance sheet, which is the one thing the startups cannot buy.

ZHAOWEI 兆威机电

The component layer, and the one house on this page a small buyer can straightforwardly transact with. Shenzhen Zhaowei Machinery & Electronics, on Yanhu Road in Bao'an, came up through micro-drive: coreless motors, precision planetary gearboxes, encoders and the control electronics around them. It now sells joint motors and integrated dexterous hand actuators, with bionic hands in the seventeen to twenty degree of freedom range and force-sensing finger modules driven knuckle by knuckle. Worth knowing because humanoid programmes rarely stall on vision or planning; they stall on actuators, on backlash, heat and service life. Sells modules, not robots.
