01 / The landscape

The landscape

A massage gun is a percussion therapy device, a brushless DC motor driving a reciprocating head into soft tissue at high frequency. The motor is the product. BLDC (brushless direct-current) motors replaced brushed motors across the category because they run cooler, quieter and last significantly longer while delivering higher torque in a compact housing. The percussion mechanism converts rotary motion to linear stroke: amplitude (the distance the head travels per cycle, typically 10–16 mm) determines whether the device delivers real deep-tissue percussion or superficial vibration. Speed is adjustable, usually 1,000 to 3,200 percussions per minute, some flagships pushing toward 5,000.

Stall force, the resistance a user can apply before the motor stalls, is the second critical spec. Budget units stall around 20–30 pounds, standard units at 40–50, and premium devices near 60 pounds. The battery is lithium-ion, typically 2,600 to 4,800 mAh, with runtimes from two to eight hours depending on capacity and speed setting. Noise reduction engineering is the third battleground: BLDC motors intrinsically, internal shock-absorbing cushioning and damping materials, and high-density engineering plastic or aircraft-grade aluminium housings for sound insulation combine to bring quiet flagships into the 35–50 decibel range.

This category exploded in Shenzhen after Theragun and Hyperice proved the market around 2018–2020. Within two years, Alibaba listed hundreds of "Theragun-style" ODM suppliers across the Pearl River Delta. The pattern is classic PRD rebadge: a small number of shared internal platform designs with customised branding, shell colours and head-attachment sets ship under many different brand names at $40–$100. Even premium Western brands rely on Chinese BLDC motor and component suppliers. The line between "sourcing components" and "sourcing the whole device" is thin here.

The PRD massage-gun supply base is fragmented. Large, certification-heavy factories do genuine third-party ODM at scale (SKG, Beoka, Pentasmart). Hybrid manufacturer-brands run a strong own D2C label alongside OEM/ODM side business (Vemake, Recoverfun). There is no single dominant ODM; programme selection depends on volume, certifications needed, and whether a competing house brand on the same shelf is acceptable.
