01 / The landscape

The landscape

A microphone is a capsule plus a chain to carry what it hears. The capsule is the heart, an electret or true condenser for detail, a dynamic for loud and rugged, a MEMS for the tiniest mics, and it sets the character the way a sensor sets a mouse. Around it sit a preamp and an ADC for USB and digital models, and for anything wireless a 2.4GHz or UHF radio plus DSP for noise cancellation. The reference design is the capsule and, increasingly, that wireless-and-DSP module.

The category splits by use. USB and XLR condensers for podcast, streaming and studio; 2.4GHz wireless lavaliers, the booming creator format, a clip transmitter, a receiver and a charging case in the DJI and Rode mould; UHF handheld and headset systems for stage and karaoke; and conference and gooseneck arrays. The live frontier is on-device AI noise cancellation and the transformable lav that clips, mounts or plugs in one body.

Geography is unusually concentrated. Enping, in Jiangmen, calls itself China's microphone capital, more than 300 audio makers and a reported 90% of the country's microphone exports, home of the wireless, karaoke and PA tradition. Shenzhen owns the modern, mobile-first tech: USB streaming mics and 2.4GHz lavaliers tuned for phones. And the brands are now Chinese: Maono and Boya sit on Amazon next to Rode and Shure, designing and making their own rather than rebadging.

For export the gates are FCC and CE for the radio (with banned frequency bands to avoid) plus RoHS. Above this layer sit the names that mostly design elsewhere, Shure, Sennheiser, Rode, Audio-Technica, DJI, and the houses below make for everyone else, often around bought-in capsules and the same 2.4GHz chipsets. The tell of the rebadge: one wireless lav under a dozen names.

Maono Technology

Shenzhen

Maono (Shenzhen Maono Technology) is the creator-studio brand that also makes: USB and XLR condensers, the Maonocaster all-in-one sound-card and mixer kits, wireless 2.4GHz lavaliers and monitor headphones, with a Red Dot Award and OEM work for known names behind its own label. It splits the business cleanly, a DCMT factory for ODM and the Maono brand for OBM, so you can hire the line or buy the badge.
