The landscape

A portable projector is an imaging engine and a light source in a compact housing, with three core technologies competing for the socket. DLP (Digital Light Processing) uses a Texas Instruments Digital Micromirror Device, millions of microscopic mirrors switching thousands of times per second, with single-chip designs using a spinning colour wheel for sequential colour. Sharp images, high contrast, no screen-door effect, but the colour wheel can produce rainbow artefacts on fast motion. LCD passes light through liquid-crystal panels for each colour channel, bright, natural colour, no rainbows, the workhorse of the budget portable. LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) is the reflective hybrid, liquid crystal over a mirrored silicon backplane, delivering the best blacks but at a cost and complexity premium, rare in true portable form factors.

The light source defines the product tier. LED is the default for portables, compact, efficient, a 20,000 to 30,000-hour lifespan, adequate brightness for darkened rooms. Laser (often ALPD, Advanced Laser Phosphor Display, invented by Shenzhen's own Appotronics) delivers higher sustained brightness with minimal lumen decay over 30,000-plus hours, opening the door to larger screens and ambient-light viewing but at a cost and size premium. The bulk of sub-$300 portables ship LED; laser climbs in above $500.

The smart-OS chipset is the third decision. Amlogic (S905X family) for stronger performance in mid-to-premium Android TV builds, Allwinner (H713, quad-core Cortex-A53) for cost-performance in high-volume ODM runs, MediaTek for smart-TV software ecosystem leverage. The chipset sets Android version support, Widevine DRM tier and Netflix L1 certification eligibility, all things brands specify in the PRD and the ODM integrates. Resolution tiers run 720p native (entry), 1080p native (mainstream sweet spot) and true native 4K (premium, costly DMD chips); most "4K" portables are 1080p native with 4K input decoding.

The Shenzhen cluster splits by function: Nanshan for R&D and laser-core IP (Appotronics, JMGO), Bao'an for assembly and injection moulding (Wanbo, Everycom production), Longgang for parts and PCBA. Design and brand headquarters sit near Nanshan's talent and capital; production lines fill the Bao'an–Longgang industrial corridor, often within a thirty-minute drive, which is what makes seven-day ODM sampling feasible.

Appotronics (Shenzhen Appotronics Corporation, founded 2006, Nanshan High-tech Park) invented ALPD laser-phosphor display technology in 2007 and became the first Guangdong laser-display company listed on Shanghai's STAR Market (688007.SH). It is the upstream engine house, supplying laser optical engines and core modules to brands rather than assembling finished consumer units. Its technology sits inside Formovie (a Xiaomi–Appotronics joint venture) and it holds DCI digital cinema certification, only the fifth company globally to achieve it. Everycom Technology

Longgang, Shenzhen

Everycom (Shenzhen Everycom Technology, founded 2013, Bantian, Longgang District) is the catalog ODM, the house that builds for multiple projector brands and sells its own (Everycom, Touyinger, Jenovox). It states deep strategic cooperation with Formovie, Changhong, JMGO, Dangbei and Wanbo. DLP and LED engines, native 720p to 4K, Android up to v15, with MOQs as low as 50 units and roughly seven-day sample turnaround. The easiest entry point for a portable projector programme.

Wanbo 万播科技

Bao'an, Shenzhen

Wanbo (Shenzhen Wanbo Technology, founded 2016, Shiyan Street, Bao'an District) is the Xiaomi-ecosystem-adjacent portable house. Legally independent of Xiaomi but distributed through Xiaomi-linked retail channels, it focuses on DLP and single-LCD portable projectors with integrated industrial design, R&D and in-house production. Multiple FCC-certified models (T2 Max, WPC14 and others) confirm real, shipping products. The house for a compact, price-competitive portable in the Xiaomi orbit.

Vivibright (Shenzhen Vivibright Technology, since 2006, Chegongmiao, Futian District) is the veteran, nearly two decades in portable projection with a core management team drawn from Foxconn, Premier and Coretronic (high-end OEM/ODM video houses). ISO 9001 certified, CE/FCC/RoHS compliant, producing DLP and 3LCD portables with LED light sources and full OEM/ODM with independent test reports. The house with deep manufacturing pedigree.

A 6,000-square-metre factory, 150-plus workers, eight engineers, five injection-moulding machines and roughly 50,000 units a month. LCD and LED mini projectors, 4K-capable models, Android smart OS integration, CE/FCC/RoHS/TELEC (Japan) certified. Also makes cameras and webcams. The house for volume at competitive cost with no competing consumer brand.
