Guangdong is the world's largest home appliance manufacturing base, and the concentration inside it is tighter than most people expect. Two places carry most of it: Shunde district in Foshan, where Midea has its headquarters in Beijiao town, and Zhuhai, where Gree does. The scale is hard to hold in the head. Midea turned over 456.5 billion yuan in the 2025 financial year, roughly 66 billion dollars, on net profit of 43.9 billion, and it is the largest home appliance company on earth as well as the largest maker of microwave ovens and a substantial OEM for brands that would rather you did not know. Gree, on its own, has capacity for 27 million residential air conditioners a year.
In an air conditioner, a refrigerator or a heat pump, the part that decides the product is the compressor. It sets the efficiency, and therefore the energy label; it sets the noise floor; and it is the largest single cost in the bill of materials. Nobody outside a handful of firms designs one. You select one, and that selection places your product in a tier. This is the closest thing this category has to a reference design, and the delta owns it outright: GMCC in Shunde builds more than a hundred million rotary compressors a year and has ranked first in the world in air conditioner rotary compressor output and sales since 2006. When people say Guangdong makes the world's air conditioning, this is the layer they are actually describing.
The gate is chemistry, and it has a date. Regulation (EU) 2024/573, the recast F-gas rules, was published on 20 February 2024 and entered into force on 11 March 2024. From 1 January 2027, plug-in room air conditioners, monoblock and other self-contained air conditioning equipment and self-contained heat pumps rated up to and including 12kW may not be placed on the EU market if they contain fluorinated greenhouse gases with a global warming potential of 150 or more. From 1 January 2033 the same threshold closes on split systems above 12kW. The practical effect is the retirement of the refrigerants this industry was built around, in favour of A2L blends such as R-454B and R-32 or, increasingly, hydrocarbons.
The winner among those is R-290, which is propane, with a global warming potential of 3, and it became viable partly through a standards change rather than a chemical one: EN IEC 60335-2-89:2022 raised the permitted charge from 150 grams to 500 grams, which is the difference between a novelty and a product. But propane burns. Designing around it means leak detection, control of ignition sources, sealed electrical compartments, revised service procedures and different transport rules, which is a redesign of the machine rather than a change of fill. Treat the refrigerant as an architectural decision made at concept stage. Ask a supplier which refrigerant a platform was designed for rather than which one it can be charged with, and ask whether the compressor itself is rated for hydrocarbons. And note the delta's structural advantage here: because Shunde and Zhuhai own the compressor as well as the appliance, they can move the entire stack at once in a way an assembler buying compressors on the open market cannot.
For export, the appliance gates are heavier than the electronics ones elsewhere in this guide. Beyond CE and UKCA there is ecodesign and energy labelling, where the class you achieve is a commercial fact rather than a compliance detail, the EN IEC 60335 safety series with its specific parts for refrigerating appliances and heat pumps, and the F-gas timetable above, which also carries quota, servicing, leak-checking and certification obligations on the operator side. EU ecodesign rules already oblige spare part availability and repair information for several appliance classes, so parts strategy and documentation belong in the programme from the start. For the United States, note separately that refrigerant transitions there run on their own schedule and do not map cleanly onto the European dates.
