This category splits cleanly in two on the silicon. At the lower end sit Android and Linux retro handhelds built around Rockchip, Allwinner or Unisoc application processors, the same class of part that powers the cheap tablets on the Android tablets page, in a shell with physical controls and a screen between two and five inches. At the upper end sit x86 Windows handhelds running AMD APUs, which are effectively small gaming laptops without keyboards and cost ten times as much. Neither processor is designed in the delta. What Shenzhen owns is everything else, and in this category that turns out to be most of the product: the industrial design, the controls, the thermal solution that decides whether a chip can hold its clocks, the battery, and above all the software image, because a retro handheld is judged almost entirely on how well its emulators and frontend are tuned.
It is also a category where the delta is the apex rather than the supplier, in a specific and slightly odd way. Nobody else makes these. Nintendo, Sony and Valve build handhelds, but nobody outside Shenzhen builds the emulation handheld as a product class, and the houses below have been iterating on it for years while the rest of the industry ignored it. The competition between them is fast, public and unusually specification-driven, which is good for buyers: the Retroid Pocket Nova arrived in 2026 at 229 dollars with an AMOLED panel and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 class performance, and AYANEO's Pocket MICRO 2 sold out ten minutes after launch.
The first gate is the one that actually stopped shipments. In April 2025 Anbernic suspended all orders shipping from China to the United States, telling customers to buy from its American warehouse stock instead, after tariffs on Chinese goods reached levels reported at 145 percent and the long-standing de minimis exemption for consignments under 800 dollars was withdrawn. That exemption was the commercial foundation of this entire category, because these are 60 to 250 dollar products bought one at a time and posted directly to consumers. Other retro hardware makers paused American sales in the same period. For anyone sourcing here, treat landed cost and route to market as the first question rather than the last one, and note that holding US warehouse stock has become a structural requirement rather than a convenience.
The second gate is copyright, and it needs stating precisely because a lot of nonsense is written about it. The hardware is not the problem. A handheld that runs Android and plays your own files is an ordinary consumer electronic device. The exposure lives in software: in emulators, and much more sharply in game images shipped with the machine. What the industry learned in 2024 is what defending that costs. Nintendo sued the developers of the Switch emulator Yuzu, and within days they settled for 2.4 million dollars, agreed to destroy all copies and ceased development, taking the 3DS emulator Citra down with them since it shared management. Because it settled before trial it set no precedent, so the underlying legal question about emulation remains formally open while the practical answer, that almost nobody can afford to test it, is entirely settled. A device sold empty and a device sold with a memory card full of games are different legal objects. Ask which one you are ordering, and get it in writing.
Routine gates are light: CE, UKCA, FCC, RoHS and RED for the radios, UN38.3 for the cell, and the usual age and content labelling if you publish anything yourself. Two commercial risks matter more. Memory pricing has moved violently through 2026, and AYANEO halted its Next 2 programme over it, so a bill of materials quoted on last quarter's RAM and flash is not a quote. And software support is the real warranty in this category: these devices are defined by their firmware images and community ports, so ask what happens to updates when a model is superseded, which in practice is often within a year.
