The landscape

This category arrives in two shapes that look like one product. There is the portable power station, a box with a handle holding lithium iron phosphate cells, an inverter, a solar charge controller and a row of sockets, which you buy like an appliance and plug into nothing. And there is the fixed home system, a wall battery and a hybrid inverter wired into the consumer unit alongside a meter and an app, which is a permanent electrical installation. The bill of materials is nearly the same. The regulatory universe is not remotely the same, and confusing the two is the most expensive mistake available in this category. China accounts for more than 60 percent of global production capacity in home backup power either way.

The part that decides the product is not the cell. Cells are a commodity bought by the container, and LFP chemistry has settled the safety and cycle-life argument for stationary use. What makes a system good is the hybrid inverter and its firmware: how many milliseconds it takes to transfer to backup when the grid drops, how it detects islanding and refuses to energise a dead line, how it negotiates with the meter, and how it behaves on a weak or noisy supply. That is power electronics and control software, and it is the reason this cluster sits in Shenzhen rather than beside a mine. Worth noting where the people came from, too: EcoFlow was launched in 2017 by alumni of DJI, the same talent pool that produced the team behind the 3D printer that reset that category. Drone engineering is battery management, power conversion and motor control under weight pressure, which turns out to transfer.

The gate is grid code, and it is the most under-appreciated barrier in this guide. A portable station that only fills sockets is a consumer product. The moment a system can back-feed a building or synchronise with the network it becomes grid-connected generating equipment and must be certified against each country's own grid code: VDE-AR-N 4105 in Germany, G98 and G99 in Great Britain, CEI 0-21 in Italy, and a different document in every other market, each with its own anti-islanding, voltage and frequency ride-through and reactive power behaviour. These certificates are tied to a specific model and often a specific firmware version. A system selling well in Germany cannot simply be shipped to Britain, and a firmware update can invalidate the paperwork. Ask which grid codes a given inverter is certified to, on which firmware, and ask to see the certificate rather than a claim of compliance.

Then the batteries themselves, where a date worth circling is approaching. From 18 February 2027 electric vehicle and industrial batteries above 2kWh placed on the EU market must carry a digital battery passport reachable by QR code, holding carbon footprint, recycled content, chemistry, state of health and supply chain due diligence data. Stationary storage counts as industrial, so essentially every home battery is in scope. That is the same date on which the removability duty described on the handheld fans page falls due, which is a useful thing to hold in your head: one regulation, one deadline, two completely different obligations depending on whether your cell is a sealed portable one under 5kg or an industrial pack above 2kWh. Almost every company in this guide is caught by one or the other.

Beyond that: IEC 62619 for industrial secondary cell safety, UN38.3 for transport, and for the United States UL 9540 for the system with UL 9540A thermal runaway propagation testing, which is what fire officials and insurers actually ask for. CE, UKCA and RED cover the radio and the app. Two practical notes people miss. A portable power station of any useful capacity sits far above the 100 watt-hour airline limit, so it can travel neither in a cabin nor in a hold, which shapes the entire distribution model. And installation is regulated separately from product: in most European markets a fixed system must be commissioned by a certified installer and registered with the network operator, so a supplier without an installer channel has sold you only half of a product.

Launched in Shenzhen in 2017 by founders out of DJI, EcoFlow did more than any other house to turn the portable power station from a camping accessory into a home backup category. It reached unicorn status in 2021 on a roughly 100 million dollar Series B led by Sequoia China, now HongShan, and the current flagship Delta Pro 3 carries 4,096Wh at 4,000W continuous with 8,000W surge and expands towards 48kWh, which is no longer a portable product in any meaningful sense but a house battery with wheels. That trajectory, from a box you carry to a system you install, is the whole category in one company, and it is why the grid code question above arrives whether a house planned for it or not.

BYD 比亚迪

The serious end, and a reminder that the largest player in European home storage is a Shenzhen company most Europeans think of as a carmaker. BYD's Battery-Box line has led residential storage in Europe, taking around 30 percent of the market in the first half of 2024 after 29 percent the year before, and has been named Top Brand PV for storage by EUPD Research three years running. It passed 1.5 million residential systems installed worldwide and broadened at Smarter E Europe in Munich in 2026 with the Battery-Box Mega, spanning 62.4kWh up to 5.24MWh, plus a residential ecosystem of smart, backup and AC charging boxes. Vertically integrated down to its own cells, which in this category is the durable advantage.

BLUETTI PowerOak

Shenzhen

The operating company, Shenzhen PowerOak, was founded in 2013 and had already spent years on distributed storage before the BLUETTI brand was created in 2019 to take it to Western consumers directly. It has raised around 150 million dollars and runs alongside EcoFlow as one of the two names that defined the portable segment, competing hard on capacity per dollar and on expandable architectures. Useful as the second quote on any portable or semi-portable programme, because the two houses sit close enough on specification that commercial terms, channel support and warranty handling become the real differentiators rather than the hardware.

Growatt 古瑞瓦特

Shenzhen

The platform layer, and the house to talk to if what you actually need is the power electronics rather than a finished brand. Founded in Shenzhen in 2011, Growatt builds PV inverters, storage systems and the energy management software above them, with a sales network across roughly 190 countries and an AI energy management platform connected to about 4.2 million residential, commercial and industrial users. Third-party data in its listing prospectus put it third worldwide in residential energy storage inverter shipments in 2025 at 10.2 percent, and first in the Americas at 14.7 percent. It has been named an S&P Global Tier 1 PV inverter supplier for 2026 and is pursuing a Hong Kong listing.
